Baron Davis is very good at basketball

For some reason, I always keep forgetting this. It probably has a lot to do with injuries and the fact that Davis has spent most of his career at outposts like New Orleans and Golden State, but still.

Anyway, here’s a helpful reminder of exactly how good Davis was in college. As the Lakers and Suns figure things out, I’m already thinking about whether the Warriors can really upset the Mavs. If Davis continues to unleash, that prospect looks more and more likely.

Hey, it’s Dan Majerle day on The Postmen!

Full confession: I only ran across that Dan Majerle and Tim Hardaway kissing video because I was looking for that clip of Majerle draining those re-donk-u-lous shots before the Suns game a few days ago. (As the Blogfather alluded to in the comments.)

And thanks to YouTube user barett90, I now can put it on blast to the masses! Seriously, thanks buddy. Because of you, I’ve now officially declared April 26 Dan Majerle Day on the Postmen. E, if you’re out there, mark this down on your calendar. We will celebrate it next year if we’re still alive and kicking.

So to recap my day: two Dan Majerle videos and a picture of a penis. Man, I’m awesome.

Case of the Mondays: Breathe it in, let it out … it’s Super Bowl Week

rexshades.jpgLast week was a cipher. An imposter. I stop short of calling it a total fraud - but it was certainly a shell of a Super Bowl Week. No media day? Pshh. No Tijauna-bound star players melting down? Whatever. No ESPN Countdown guys guffawing in front of a beautiful Miami backdrop, and then later being photographed surrounded by tramps? Last week, listen: I served with Super Bowl Week, I knew Super Bowl Week, Super Bowl Week was a friend of mine…you are no Super Bowl Week.

It’s important we make this distinction so we can truly revel in everything the next seven days can be. This type of needless build up and inappropriate moralizing happens but once a year (or whenever Joe Buck is involved), so why waste the moment by failing to realize its brilliance? For shame, apathetic football fan, for shame.

That’s why we’ll be casting our beady little focus on as much Super Bowl material as possible this week. Why fight the hype when you can perpetuate it? Oh, and guess what - for the second time in our lives (the first was when we were one) the Chicago freaking Bears are in the Super Bowl. You’ll forgive us if we feel the need to remind you of this as much as possible in the next few days. Apologies in advance.

Here’s what happened while we were thinking about the Super Bowl this weekend:

The Suns waxed impressive. Not as impressive as their last victory over the Cavs, sure, but impressive enough to win their 17th game in a row, a number that becomes all the more mindblowing when you consider it’d be the 34th in a row were it not for two herculean efforts from MVP candidates. Bow down to your desert overlords.

Hey, at least the Suns are good! Speaking of desert overlords, the Arizona Wildcats sufficiently surrendered that status Saturday at the hands of the North Carolina Heels that presumably Tar accidentally. Beat. Down. Lute Olsen looked about one UNC transition alley-oop from a pulling a total Barrett Robbins. (Sorry, I know manic depression’s not funny. Strike that from the record.) In the continually overlooked Pac-10, Aaron Brooks and crew held off a tough Washington State team, and in the Big Ten, Ohio State fell asleep just long enough to let Drew Neitzel and his gang of ragtag Spartans nearly beat them Saturday. Alas, their almost game-winning three was for all Naughtzel. (Sorry again. I’m full of apologies today.)

Eh, you know, just another day at the office. It’s too bad Tiger Woods and Roger Federer aren’t both basketball players, because then I would be really forced to care about their respective dominance. Instead, I did laundry while my roommate fawned over Tiger’s latest Tour win - just his seventh in a row, by the way - and didn’t even pay a wink to another series of Federer masterpieces in his Australian Open win. God, let someone else win, eh fellas? No one likes roboticism - didn’t you learn anything from Will Smith?

In honor of Gilbert Arenas … and his (my) beautiful shoes

Writing about Gilbert Arenas on a blog is becoming redundant - actually, correction, it is redundant - but today is a special occasion in the life of one young PostmanE.

His new favorite shoes, the ones he wanted for Christmas but didn’t get, the ones he’s (not really) saved for … well, they were finally purchased a couple of days ago. Observe the beauty:

gil.jpg

Aw yeah. That’s the stuff. Let my personal celebration officially begin.

For some reason, these shoes have combined with Gilbert’s impossible-to-dislike personality to win a special place in my heart. I usually don’t buy basketball shoes that are “The [insert player’s name here]’s” unless that insertion is “Jordan,” but these were impossible to resist. So there you have it, shoe junkies.

Seriously, though, this post has a point: to direct you to Gilbert’s tremendous swag yesterday after yet another game-winning shot. MJD over at The Fanhouse has the video and, well, it pretty much says it all. Yesterday’s NBA action was tremendous all-around, including last night’s holy crap clinic by the Suns, but nothing compared to Gilbert’s continued excellence. He keeps this up, and pretty soon he’ll be outgrowing his blog-pet status - if he hasn’t already.

Opening Association night

heatbench.jpg

Hey, since we’ve pretty much been all about self-indulgence this week, let’s stay with that theme, shall we?

Bulls wallop Heat of Miami. In cases such as this, we rejoice. It won’t be like this every night, but hey, we’ll take it. It felt as if we were watching the Bears on the hardwood.

Turn to the fabulous Blog-A-Bull for some happy words about last night’s game. You’ll find some sulking around these parts.

A Kobe-less (YouTube Chapelle on Kobe link) Los Angeles I’m Yours Lakers defeated the Suns last evening. Laker fans converse about their team in these parts. Suns fans get down girl, go head get down right huuur.

Memorial Day brings the funk

flag.jpgOff work Monday? Three-day weekend upon you? Sure, it sounds ok, but you know you’ll get sucked in to hanging out with family eventually. Oohhh. Ouch.

Never fear. There’s plenty of stuff to watch this weekend.

Tonight, the stellar NBA playoffs continue as the Mavs try not to get Diaw’d again and the Suns try to set records for chucking ability and the U.S. National Team attempts to get a friendly win. Tomorrow, the Pistons and Heat start up again, and the Cubs will try to WIN A GAME PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

Sunday, a bunch of cars will go around in a circle for a few hours, and everyone will love it. I’ll be watching basketball, thank you.

Good luck to you all.

(By the way, not to get too schmaltzy or anything on you, but thanks to the people who are the real reason we have a day off work Monday - our fallen, and living soldiers. Props, homies.)

Mark Cuban is a sweaty, friendly owner

cuban1.jpgThe photographic proof is right there. Mark’s just happy.

And he should be, as his Mavs took down the Spurs last night, getting over that playoff hump they’ve been struggling with for so long.

That was only the first Game 7 of the night, as the Suns and Clippers went deep into the night to finally settle that West Coast situation out there.

Not gonna lie - wasn’t awake for this one. It was a taxing day and E needed his sleep.

Nonetheless, the LA Times is telling me that the Clippers ended their dream season - when you’re the Clippers, getting to the second round of the playoffs is a dream season - last night thanks to some clever basketball by the Suns.

You have to hand it to Steve Nash here. For all the talk about Kobe, and then LeBron, Nash is quietly leading his team, sans Amare Stoudamire, closer and closer to the NBA Finals. Not bad for a Canadian, eh?
