Welcome to the “Devil’s Mouth”

sombrero.jpgSo, there’s a PGA tournament event in Mexico this weekend, the first of its kind south of the border. And, it features something never before seen on tour.

Instead, it boasts the “Devil’s Mouth.”

With white sand in front and mossy grass dripping over various shades of limestone around the sides, the “mouth” actually is the opening to an underground, cave-like passageway that comes out behind the second hole.

Known as a “cenote,” it’s the first of many natural delights found on El Camaleon, the Greg Norman-designed venue for this slice of PGA Tour history, the Mayakoba Golf Classic, which opens Thursday.

“It gives character right away,” Norman said. “It’s an opening statement: ‘Here it is!”‘

Viewed from tee-to-green, the area is shaped like an upside-down egg. It is about 30 yards long and 20 yards wide. It’s steep, too, something not truly appreciated until standing on the green side and looking back toward the sandy front.

Hey! Did you see how excited Greg Norman was about it?!!!! Could you tell?!!!!!

Admittedly, this is actually pretty cool. And, apparently it’s a nice spot to touch a girl’s body.

“It’s a bad place to be when you’re playing golf, but it might be a fun place to be with your girlfriend,” joked one caddie.

Viva Mexico!

In honor of the U.S. Open

So, we’re not exactly major golfers around here, but we love the major tournaments, especially when Michelle Wie isn’t playing in them. (Kidding!)

In honor of the Open at Winged Foot, the difficulty of which is apparently causing grown men to break out in tears when they hit into the rough, here’s a different sort of golf video. It’s, well, it’s interesting, to say the least.

Michelle Wieeeeeeeeeeeeee!

michelle_wie2.jpgBoy, this is dissapointing.

Or, not really dissapointing, depending on how much you care about golf and/or Michelle Wie.

To be honest, I can’t say I care about golf enough myself to really be concerned if Wie starts rocking out some men at the U.S. Open, or any other tournament (except the, um, Masters, obviously). I guess I can say that I’m glad she’s being forced to qualify along with everyone else. Publicity stunt though it may be, if she can play with the men, she can play. If she doesn’t qualify, fine, but at least everyone in spikes is being held to the same standard.

That said, I can understand the argument here as well:

Wie’s presence in men’s tour events and her attempt to gain entry to the U.S. Open has been met with skepticism from male pros around the world. Recently, European Tour member Jean Van de Velde said, ‘I have no objection to Michelle Wie or any other women playing in our tournaments so long as we are allowed to play in theirs. And, yes, I’m ready to play in a skirt.’

It’s difficult to manufacture a real opinion on all of this. I’m strangled with indifference.
