Not to follow suit with the masses and keep gushing about Andre Agassi but…..

…this finally found its way onto YouTube and damn it, it deserves a post. Here’s the whole sequence of Andre Agassi’s emotional farewell at the U.S. Open.

At almost nine minutes, it’s a little lengthy, but hey, I think it’s definitely worth a watch if you didn’t catch it.

Oh, and the video feed is from Sky Sports, so ignore the smarmy British accent of the one announcer.

Cheers, mate.

(The crying starts around the 2:00 mark. Andre’s speech starts just after the 6:00 mark. You know, just in case you don’t want to sit through the whole thing.)

Our love affair with Agassi

agassi.jpgScenario: You are in a drinking establishment in the heartland of America. It’s crowded, full of large televisions (some of the HD and projector variety) showing an array of sporting highlights and competition.

And what seems to captivate the audience of the bar beyond any (even the consumption of alcohol!), is a second round match in the U.S. Open.

Now, I know no one in the bar I was at last night really cares about a second round match in the U.S. Open. It’s more of an American obsession with the fallen relic, the send off for a man who, for all intents and purposes, is one of the few names in tennis the average sporting fans actually knows. You think American men’s tennis; Andre Agassi will surely spring to mind. (Him and that cutie Andy Roddick. Pete Sampras too.)

You remember the Cannon and Nike commercials. You remember the wild mane of hair when you were a growing up.

I know no one last night really cares about a second round match in the U.S. Open. But hey, I was rooting for him too.

Agassi pulls his best Happy Gilmore

In honor of Andre Agassi’s last hooray at the U.S. Open (which begins tonight in a match against Andrei (same name, different spelling!) Pavel) YouTube provides us with this Nike commercial circa 1993.

It’s rebel Andre with his rawk! mane of hair tooling around out on the golf course. He even busts out a couple Happy Gilmore-esque driver shots, which are damn near impossible to pull off. Well, for me, at least. That’s because I routinely shoot over 100 for 18 holes, but that’s for a different post entirely.

So yeah, just watch the video.

EDIT: The dude that put the video on YouTube disabled the embedding code. Bastard. So watch the golf commercial of Andre here. I put up a Red Hot Chili Peppers and Andre commercial instead. Weird how they are still a big part of pop culture to this day, no?
