Just a suspicion…

manning.jpgCornerback Ricky Manning Jr. signed an offer sheet with the Chicago Bears Friday and sealed the deal to join the Monsters of the Midway. Then, later that weekend, Manning was sealed inside of a prison cell after being arrested on suspicion of assault. It was outside Denny’s. At 3 a.m.

That seems to be just the luck of the Chicago Bears. Yes, the same team that used their own suspicion to draft Cade McNown with their first pick in the NFL Draft. And Rashaan Salaam. And Curtis Enis.

Welcome to Chicago, Ricky Manning Jr. I have a suspicion it’s going to be an interesting year for the Bears.

The ‘Stache is Going Pro

morrison.jpgNBA fans, Adam Morrison’s mustache and mop top are coming to a city near you. Morrison hasn’t made it exactly official just yet, but the NCAA scoring leader and hippie-wannabe is expected to announce Wednesday that he will be entering the NBA Draft. And I can’t say I blame him for it.

This past year, Morrison and J.J. Redick were like two peas in a pod. Their names were always said in the same breath and the comparisons were neverending. Now, with both players going pro, the comparisons will not cease. This rivalry is definitely not that of Kobe vs. Shaq, or LeBron vs. Dwayne. It’s a very unique one, but unfortunately for both players, it’s temporary. There is just no way it will continue on the next level. If anything, Morrison will finally outshine Redick once and for all.

A year from now, Morrison will be making millions of dollars as an 8-10 point scorer coming off the bench. Plus, he better shave - because the Adam Morrison look was so 2006.

No Big Surprise from Big Baby

bigbaby.jpgIt’s a crucial point in time for many college basketball stars. They must ask themselves some questions - should I go pro and sign a multi-million dollar contract and begin my professional career and sign dozens of endorsement deals - or should I go back to school?

Gonzaga’s Adam Morrison can’t decide. Duke’s Josh McRoberts can’t either. But LSU’s Tyrus Thomas and Glen Davis - who formed one of the best frontcourt tandems in the nation last season - have made up their minds.

One is a surprise, the other is not. Thomas and ‘Big Baby’ Davis both loved being in the spotlight this past season during the Tigers’ Final Four run. Thomas, however, seemed to enjoy it the most out of the two big men and began seeing himself as a future NBA player the minute ESPN ran a highlight of him. Davis, on the other hand, realized he had a lot of work left to do before heading to the NBA, especially when it came to his eating habits.

Nobody wants to see another Baby Shaq in the NBA just yet. Good decision, Glen.

Jeff Capel’s Compelling Story

capel.jpgBefore Dane Fife became the youngest coach in Division I history, Jeff Capel was the boy among men. To an extent, the new 31-year-old head coach at Oklahoma is still that boy among men in the rugged Big 12 conference.

Now, with his arrival at OU, Capel better grow up quickly.

Andy Katz - surprise, surprise - confirmed earlier today that Capel would be leaving Virginia Commonwealth and joining the Sooners, nearly two weeks removed from Kelvin Sampson’s departure. The former Duke standout boasted a 79-41 overall record at VCU and led the Rams to the NCAA tourney in 2004 and the NIT tourney in 2005.

Capel will inherit an OU squad that has one of the top recruiting classes in the nation for next season. So basically Jeff, don’t mess things up.

Act like that college star that burned North Carolina time and time again.

Prior restraint: Cubs pitcher faces lawsuit from autograph session

Mark Prior just can’t seem to stop Cubs fans from crying. Now, the oft-injured pitcher isprior.jpg involved in a breach-of-contract lawsuit from an autograph session gone wrong. Supposedly, Prior signed only 196 of the 300 autographs that he was contractually obligated to provide, allegedly leaving two poor kids laying on the ground in tears.

I’ll refrain from too much Cubs bashing here, but come on Mark - think of the children here. It’s bad enough they are growing up as North Side fans; don’t make their situations worse.

But maybe Mark didn’t sign the autographs because he is busy working hard to make a triumphant return.

Or maybe he was just afraid his autograph arm would get hurt again.

Here we go again…

Our favorite columnist/wanna be journalist Andy Katz is at it again. Today ESPN’s Katz reported that John Calipari is in “serious negotiations” with N.C. State regarding its head coaching position.

This is not the first time Mr. Katz has made a blunder with a head coaching vacancy. But incalipari.gif this situation, he might just be onto something. He makes a good point in the article, saying that Calipari would be “in the Triangle with Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina’s Roy Williams.” He goes on to call Calipari the “king of Conference USA,” which would be his biggest reason not to leave Memphis.

As usual though, we’ll leave it up to the real journalists in this country to give us the final word on the situation - or at least until we see Calipari at a press conference with an N.C. St. hat on.

(Update: Andy Katz is not the only one reporting this. Gregg Doyle from CBS SportsLine.com also says Calipari is in ’serious negotiations’ with N.C. State.)

Judgement Day for Duke lacrosse

dukelacrosse.jpg

Today, photographs from the night of the Duke lacrosse team’s alleged raping of a stripper were revealed to the court. Attorneys said that it appears as though the stripper was already injured before arriving at the team’s party and that she was “very impaired.”

The Blue Devils’ lacrosse squad has been surrounded by controversy for quite some time now, with its season canceled, its coach’s resignation and a “vile” email discovered from one of the players.

Hopefully this entire situation can be cleared up soon. This is too strong of a program to be on the shelf for a year and to have a great coach resign. However, if the team is in fact guilty in the situation, I think people will gladly say goodbye to the Duke lacrosse program.

The Postmen here will do their best to keep you up-to-date on the situation.

T.O.’s Not-So- “Lazy Sunday”

owens.jpgTerrell Owens, mark your calendar. It may seem like a trivial Sunday afternoon next fall, but October 8 means a hell of a lot to Eagles fans.

October 8 cannot come soon enough for the Eagles organization, fans and players - especially Donovan McNabb. It will be a Week 5 matchup between the Eagles and the Cowboys and a bizarre reunion between Owens and his former team - more awkward than seeing that ex-girlfriend of yours from high school who somehow dropped 20 pounds and finally learned how to apply her makeup (you all know what I’m talking about).

So T.O., you might want to put some extra padding in that helmet, strap on some extra rib guards and run out of bounds absolutely anytime you can. The Eagles will do anything they can to injure you, and injure you bad.

It won’t be a Lazy Sunday in Philadelphia.

We Recommend: “Learning to Fly” - The Chicago Bulls 1991 Championship Video

bulls.jpgThough it is only available on VHS and is 15 years old now, “Learning to Fly”: The Chicago Bulls 1991 Championship video is simply a 30-minute compilation of sports heaven.

As a 7-year-old boy living in a suburb of Chicago, this video was a mainstay in my everyday routine - Wake up, eat breakfast, go to school, come home and watch my Bulls video. Of course, this had to be done while adorning my MJ jersey and shoes (yeah, I was just that nerdy).

I’ll be honest, not much has changed since then. The video still gives me chills; it makes me want to get out onto the court, drive the lane against Sam Perkins and the rest of the Laker defense, make a bold leap to the basket and change hands mid-air for the layup.

Phil Jackson’s mustache, John Paxson’s short shorts and M.J.’s tongue in full effect; it’s all here.

So if you can, dig around in your closets or video cabinets or get out to the nearest video store and get your hands on one of the most incredible sports videos of our time.

I’ll leave you with some of the lyrics from the video’s theme song, performed by the one and only Tom Petty:

Well the good ol’ days, may not return.
And the rocks might melt, and the sea may burn.I’m learnin’ to fly, but I ain’t got wings.
Comin’ down, is the hardest thing.

Back in the high life again

Well, well, well. Anna came crawling back to Kris. In a bizarre twist to an even more bizarreanna-and-kris1.jpg situation, Anne Benson decided to trash her divorce papers with husband Kris Benson.

There’s just not much more that can be said about all of this. If I’m Miguel Tejada right now, i’m ready to demand a trade to get the hell away from all of this. Besides him, Anna Benson is the bigger star in the Orioles organization … not a good thing.

And unfortunately for the Orioles, this was about the most media attention they will get all season.
