Don’t weep for Gus Johnson

Last night, someone (though I can’t remember who, which means this was probably an internal dialogue) mentioned that they thought Gus Johnson had a sub-par first round of the tournament. I disagree. Gus thrives in closing moments of games, and when the most exciting game you broadcast is a businesslike Michigan State win over Pittsburgh, there’s not much of a climax to build to.

So, no, Gus didn’t have a bad first round. His games did. Let the criticism die here.

Bill Raftery was also impressive. My dream is to some day pair Johnson and Raftery in a fusion of orgasmic enthusiasm, excited nonsense terminology, and Dewar’s. That’s the world I one day want to live in.
