MLB 2K8 + Pitchfork = Intriguing
Ever since I wrote this post, I’ve gotten back in to the video game circuit. I’m not afraid to admit it. FIFA, NBA 2K8, and especially Bioshock are now sucking up all the leftover time I have when I’m not working/blogging, and it’s a fantastic feeling, as anyone who has observed the beauty of Bioshock in HD will attest. It’s good to be back.
So I am especially excited about this development, in which Pitchfork media picked half of the music for MLB 2K8’s soundtrack. No telling if Pitchfork’s penchant for adverbs is making the crossover, too:
2K Sports has invited Pitchfork Media to select half of the music to be featured in Major League Baseball 2K8, guaranteeing that, along with the deepest and most authentic baseball simulation experience available, fans will also be able to enjoy a cutting-edge selection of the hottest music around - including artists such as Modest Mouse, Peter Bjorn & John, The Cure, The Strokes, LCD Soundsystem, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Each artist and song selected for the game by Pitchfork Media will be denoted as a “Pitchfork Pick,” and will include additional bio information as well.
Not to nitpick, but if we’re dealing with a press release about Pitchfork, it’s only right that we make fun of the releaser’s clear lack of musical knowledge. For example, Peter Bjorn & John suck, The Cure haven’t been relevant in two decades, The Strokes are done, and Modest Mouse is not exactly “cutting-edge” or “hottest.” They’re Modest Mouse, the still-solid founders of post-2000 indie pop, but not, you know, “hot.”
Still, this is the perfect storm for me. MLB 2K8 is a good game; it’s, you know, baseball; and now that it includes at least 50-proof pretentious music snobbery, I’m freaking sold. The day I can play home run derby mode while Panda Bear blares from my speakers is the day I can die a happy man. Plus, it’s like they’re marketing just to me! And no one else in the world! Just like The Cure’s lyrics! Only Robert Smith truly understands my pain.

Remember that The Cure song at the beginning of “King of Kong?”
That was great.
I will own anyone in Fifa. “oh yeah, thirst for blood, bring it!”
Oh, oh! The World’s Largest Poop Episode I think is a spoof of King of Kong I think. Check it out!
