Digger Phelps … sigh

It is the long-held opinion of this writer that Digger Phelps, though he knows his schtick and plays it up well, is still an insufferable douche. After all, this is a man whose main contributions to the college basketball discourse are blind loyalty to Bob Knight and a matching tie and highlighter schema. And that’s it.

So where others would look on the above video innocuously, I am filled with rage. Sweet, sweet innocence, spoiled by the man who invented the Tielighter. Sad, really.

In other college basketball news this weekend, Michigan State decided that making shots is helpful, thus posting a 71.3 effective field goal percentage (!!) and routing our Indiana at the Breslin Center 103-74. Vanderbilt lost to Arkansas, Texas shamefully validated Pat Knight’s existence, and UCLA beat Arizona. And I recovered from a vicious daytime boozefest on Saturday by watching The King of Kong numerous times. Seriously: Greatest. Movie. EVAR.

“Effective field goal percentage”? Is that the opposite of “28.7 ineffectual field goal percentage”? I think it’s safe to assume most people know when we say a team shot “59.4 percent from the field,” we mean they MADE the majority of their shots. Sorry, but two posts in a row?

Cute, but no. eFG is actually a stat that measures combined shooting percentage — factored for the importance of three-point shooting percentage — more accurately. It’s much better than just using raw shooting percentage.

The formula is (FG + 0.5 * 3P) / FGA. Simple, but effective. Get it?
