Billy Gillespie has no patience for your smiles

gillespiekentucky.jpgBilly Gillespie has never struck me as a fun-loving kind of . His coaching style is visceral and intense, not to mention his infamous devotion to nothing but basketball. (CBS had a field day with this last March.) But all of Gillespie’s gritty intensity can’t will his sorry Wildcats to victory. The proper tool for that job would be talent, and Gillespie literally has none of that on hand. Which makes punitive gestures like the following all the more futile:

It wouldn’t be Kentucky basketball without intrigue. The latest example involves Morakinyo Williams and walk-on Dusty Mills. Their transgression: the camera catching them smiling and/or laughing on the bench at Vanderbilt as Kentucky was getting beat 93-52.

Neither player made the trip to LSU last weekend.

Obviously, you shouldn’t be laughing on the bench when your team’s getting drubbed. That’s a no-no. But it is kind of funny that Gillespie is still doing this sort of Norman Dale nonsense in 2008, as if his players really don’t care about losing so badly. Actually, maybe they don’t. That would actually make them the most reasonable people south of the Ohio.

while i feel bad for both players, doubly so for mills since he definitely doesn’t have the skill set to be playing d-i ball. his rudy story might end too soon.
