Cubs are charging $300 face value for a single ticket

wrigley06.jpgI suppose people who whine about the ever increasing cost of taking a family out to a good ol’ ballgame are not without merit. After all, stuffs getting ridiculous. But then again, this is the year 2008; everything is expensive. And then there’s inflation, too. This is America, folks. So it seems that within that spirit, the Cubs are going all out this year, charing $300 for a single ticket during “prime games” this season.

From the Trib’s Harball blog:

Value Games Regular Games Prime Games

Dugout Box: $100 $175 $300

Right Field Bullpen Box: $80 $160 $220

Bud Light Bleacher Box: $34 $56 $68

The Cubs have yet to announce when or how they will sell the new “bullpen box seats” located between the Cubs dugout and the bullpen. These 70 seats will be auctioned off on an individual basis, probably about two weeks before the actual game is played. Depending on how good a team the Cubs are, they can probably expect prices to rise to over $1,000 for prime summer games against the White Sox, Cardinals and Brewers.

Again, I see no problem with this. If 45-year-old lawyers from the suburbs are going to pay that much for tickets, there is simply no reason on Earth not to charge this much money. People will pay; this is the Cubs. They could put Ron Santo back at third and still have people paying to see them. Add this to the new ads going up in the stadium this season and the sidewalk being torn up at Addison & Clark and being rebuilt with bricks as I type this to accomodate people who want to shill out cash to get their names on them, the Cubs are going to see scrilla like never before this season.

I don’t know what took them so long. Welcome to America’s pastime, 2008.

They announced a 20% hike of all tickets this winter. Get your tickets early and thru the cubs. If you buy a ticket from a broker or stub hub, the prices are even more ridiculous. But hey, I’ll pay if they keep the roster stacked, so that one day we will win.
