Howard on Superman Throwdown: It’s a dunk any way you slice it
Anyone who hated on Dwight Howard’s Superman dunk for the sole reason that he didn’t actually “dunk” the ball, well, you sirs, I do not agree with. In fact, it seems like his throwing of the ball into the net is a more difficult feat than your standard slam. Eagle-eye reporter and fellow MLB FanHouse scribe Matt Watson got the skinny on Dwight Howard’s Superman dunk from the man himself last evening after the Magic’s 103-85 drudging of the Detroit Pistons.
The innovator wants everyone to know the throw in was intentional:
Me: “I’ve got to ask, you didn’t actually touch the rim on that dunk. Did you think you would have to do it again?”
Dwight: “See, the thing is, for people who never dunked before, you don’t have to touch the rim to dunk the ball. People were saying that it wasn’t a dunk because I didn’t touch the rim – you know, a lot of dunks I do during the season I don’t ever touch the rim, it’s just the fact that I put it in. And I wanted it to have the effect that it’s impossible what I did, so that’s why I threw it in like that.”
Me: “You probably would’ve broken your hand if you touched the rim considering how hard you threw it …”
Dwight: “Yeah, but you see thing was, I wanted to throw it in. That way it would have looked a lot more cooler, and people would have been like, there’s no way that somebody could possibly do that but Superman.”
My one qualm here: Superman would be a waaaay better dunker than Howard. In fact, the NBA should really cut loose next year and have a seperate contest for superheros. Except for Wonder Woman. Because she’s a woman, you ask? No friends. Because we need someone out there fighting crime. And who better than a woman with a lasso?

I hate to roll up in here with back-to-back “I’m not buying that one,” but…
The problem here is that unless these guys are asked to “call their shot,” like in pool/billiards, we’ll never know.
Regardless, it was sick (spur of the milli-second or not.) He deserves accolades, kudos, etc.
I was the one that said Howard would never win a dunk contest in a previous article. I don’t know how credible my words are, but it was not a dunk. I think a dunk is classified as a basket when the ball only travels vertically and not horizontally before going through the hoop. I think Howard was very inovative and brought some amazing things, but he only had one dunk that was impressive. The dunk when he ooped from behind the back board to himself. The oop to double tap off the glass, is not impressive at all. I think Gerald Green should have won.
