2008 White Sox: Low on talent, high on ANGER!11!!

thome499.jpgI get the feeling every article I read in the Tribune and Sun-Times this spring is going to detail how the White Sox are coming into this season with a chip on their collective shoulder and are exhibiting a bit of a mean streak to get back to super-fantastic-gritty grinderball. This is not a good feeling. Yesterday, E chronicled Ozzie Guillen’s determination to get his hard edge back this year. (I was not aware he lost this last year.)

Now, it’s Mr. Nice Guy Jim Thome chiming in with his … mean, dirty secret!

Welcome to Jim Thome’s dirty little secret.

Sure, it’s hard to believe one exists, considering he uses the word ‘‘neat’’ more often than a 1970s sitcom and shakes hands like he’s running for office.

But the White Sox slugger let the world know Monday morning that his ‘‘Mayberry R.F.D.’’ persona might not be exactly what it seems.

‘‘I’m not a mean guy, but I’m a mean guy on the field when we compete,’’ Thome said. ‘‘You may not see it, but trust me, I have a lot of heart and desire that if you’re out there, I’m going to try and beat you. Do whatever it takes.’’

Oh snap, son. Stay tuned for the rest of the week when we learn Paul Konerko and Jermaine Dye started a fight club to try and drum up some of that 2005 magic. I am trying to stay positive — trust me on this. But sometimes it’s just hard, man. Ugh.
