David Stern sees your fun and squashes it

dhoward.jpgHey, wouldn’t you like to see Dwight Howard do a super radical dunk on a hoop raised to 12 feet during the dunk contest at the All-Star Weekend this year? I know I would. Well friends, it’s ain’t happening. Because, well, here’s the NBA’s stance on the matter:

They’ve ruled that changing the height of the rim, while easily done mid-contest with the help of hydraulics, clashes with their intent to apply as many standard NBA rules to All-Star Weekend contests as possible.

OK, makes sense I suppose. But come on now: If we know anything about the dunk contest, it’s that “NBA standards” have very little to do with it. You know, with the throwing the ball off the backboard to yourself, jumping over people and ball racks and sticking things to the backboard. (I do not recall seeing this during the Bulls game last night.)

The dunk contest is not about NBA rules and standards; it’s about putting basketball players’ freak athleticism on display to wow the fans. It’s about pushing limits and standards outside the realm of a normal game. Dwight Howard is not trying to dunk newborn babies while the net is on fire; he’s just trying to raise the rim two feet.

Lighten up a little, National Basketball Association.

Standards shmandards. Rim raise or not, Dwight is cooking up some insane stuff:

The one stunt he does, the mid-air, bounce-off-the-backboard, left-hand-right-hand dunk, that’s sick.

Check out some of these dunks in response to Rudy Gay’s contest. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VH2AMNw5D8&feature=user The NBA needs to hold a contest that lets someone from the streets enter. There are some insane dunkers out there, a lot better then what we have seen from the NBA in the past. Also, they need to make the stakes higher, so Lebron, Kobe, Vince Carter and other great dunkers want to do it.

    DWIGHT4PREZZ,
I am not going to hate, Dwight Howard is the man. However, he is to tall to win a dunk contest. There is just something about height that makes dunks look ugly. As for that video, I saw nothing new. That mid air dunk where he switches hands off the backboard, it just looks like he fumbles the ball when he tries to dunk the first time. Dwight Howard is the man, but I don’t see him winning a dunk contest.
