Arlen Specter wants the basement tapes
Arlen Specter is not a trifling man. He’s been in the Senate since 1980, has sponsored some, I don’t know, bills and stuff — it’s been a while since I’ve seen Schoolhouse Rock, so don’t ask me how that shit works. The point is that when Arlen Specter says something, you better obey. Or face the consequences.
Which is why Roger Goodell finds his authority questioned on the eve of his sport’s biggest event. Specter apparently isn’t satisfied with the NFL’s movement on steroids, but more importantly, he wants the NFL to explain why it decided to destroy videotaped evidence of the Patriots’ preseason cheating scandal. Ouch:
In a telephone interview Thursday morning, Senator Arlen Specter, Republican of Pennsylvania and ranking member of the committee, said that Goodell would eventually be called before the committee to address two issues: the league’s antitrust exemption in relation to its television contract and the destruction of the tapes that revealed spying by the Patriots.“That requires an explanation,” Specter said. “The N.F.L. has a very preferred status in our country with their antitrust exemption. The American people are entitled to be sure about the integrity of the game. It’s analogous to the C.I.A. destruction of tapes. Or any time you have records destroyed.”
If you read further, you find that Specter sent a couple of letters to Roger Goodell’s office and never received a response, which had to irritate the Senator. It also shows you just how powerful Roger Goodell is: He can ignore Senators. It’s only a matter of time before he finds a way to suspend them.
Or, of course, maybe Goodell was merely adrift in a sea of bygone memories, too preoccupied to respond. Happens to the best of us.

I think the question should be asked, but not by the legislative branch of our federal government.
Just looks like yet another case of government extortion. Does Arlen and his gang of out-of-touch senators ever wonder if the common sheep would really appreciate their inefficient “cleaning up of the game” while picking up the tax bill? Of course, this story has been around for awhile. Only now does the media start pouring gas on it to get another story for Sunday’s pre-game.
American culture is a complete Joke.
Flash:
I don’t know, dude. We did come up with Rock and Roll. Gotta be worth something, right?
Anyone ever consider that the timing is not being driven by Arlen Specter, but rather by the NY Times? Specter wrote his letters last year. The NY Times is the one who decided to blow this up on Superbowl weekend.
I don’t care when Specter brought this up. He should focus on real issues affecting our country. What an ambulance chasing douche.
So I tried to e-mail the senator. How convenient that his web site is not working properly.
Any Senator that compares the CIA and national security to the Patriots and their spygate is an idiot. The NFL is an above board organization with a large security force and is responsible for itself. Mr Specter needs to worry about more pressing matters, like the economy and real corporations that take from his constituents.
Arlen specter smokes beef and is a faggot. Lets see him do something about me saying that! He’s a pussy just like everyone else from PN!
