COTM: Missouri wins; Devin dazzles; Conlin confuses
Tigers eat Mangino for dinner.
Spurred on by the play of quarterback Chase Daniel — who had some absurd numbers — Missouri toppled Kansas on Saturday night, thrusting them to No. 1 in the BCS poll. Not to take anything away from this excellent Mizzou team, but I just can’t see myself getting excited about a West Virginia-Missouri National Championship game. I just can’t. In a year where No. 1 teams have fallen to unranked foes at home and nothing at all seems certain, it all strengthens our desire for a playoff system here. On any given day, USC or Florida and most certainly LSU can handle Missouri. And I think the converse is certainly true as well. It doesn’t seem right to have a Montaineers-Tigers matchup for all the marbles. There’s too many other teams worthy of a chance.
The Bears show life, but still dead.
This team has no identity. They’re certainly no offensive juggernaut and the defense is far from perfect. But if there’s anything this team can clutch to, something they build themselves around, something they can be proud of, it’s Devin Hester. Without hashing into too much detail, his punt and kickoff return yesterday made Denver do things differently, which in turn helped the Bears. I’m still at a loss for why teams kick to the guy. The offense has proven to be so futile, so incompetent — they had nearly no yards gained for much of the third quarter — what’s the sense in letting Hester have free range to roam the field? Squib kicking and booting it out of bounds at least forces the offensive unit to try and beat you. Why wouldn’t you just do that? Oh yeah, the Bears won too — with Grossman leading a late fourth quarter march and doing the same thing again in overtime. How bout that, huh?
I think Bill Conlin has poor reading comprehension skills.
I’m not going to get into this much because it’s already been dissected ad nauseum by others who are far better writers than me. But, I will say this: I don’t mind if Conlin disagrees with CBA and sticks by his points; that’s warranted. But seriously, dude, did you even read any of the CBA’s e-mails? If you’re going to start throwing around the “bloggers suck” mantra, at least try and do so with some intelligence, please.

I would say the Bears have an identity: Hester.
Also, about Mizzo likely losing potential USC-, Fla- or LSU-Mizzo games: Aren’t the AP voters to blame here? I mean the computers take into account strength of schedule and, hence, SEC teams go up and Hawai’i goes down in their rankings. I say, as long as we’re stuck withe the BCS, at least let the computers, who have out-ranked the humans this year, do their jobs and take the screw-up writers out of this.
