Tom Izzo will not let you have the finer things in life if you lose to a DII school
This news is a bit old, but since college basketball is upon us, hey why not? Over the weekend, the Michigan State Spartans lost to Grand Valley State. At home. They are a DII school. (Sidenote: Ohio State lost to a DII school last evening as well. Yeah Big Ten!)
And apparently, MSU has these new fancy-dancy-bo-bancy locker rooms fit for kings and their noble servants. But T to the Izzo wasn’t about to let them lavish in luxury.
After the loss, Izzo decided to temporarily kick the players out of their brand-new locker room. Members of the media got to see the Spartans’ new digs after the game and they look better than some NBA locker rooms, complete with comfortable couches, a high-tech television with a video-game system and a kitchen area.
“I just look at that as, you earn the right to have something that nice, and we didn’t earn the right,” Izzo said. “I just said that, make sure that everything including the toothbrushes are out of there.”
Over the last few days, players have dressed in the weight room, or in hallways. Izzo said he’ll decide when to let them back in based on their practice or game-time performance.
A high-tech television? I wonder if you can use a remote for it and if it’s in color! See, this is why I love college basketball. I’m not an insane purist when it comes to Sports As We Know Them; I’m not jaded by the large contracts or over-commercialization. But, collegiate hoops are one of the last bastions where coaches lay a substantial smackdown on their players. This, well, this is great.
