Joe Pa does not mess around

joepa.jpgTo be honest, when I first heard Joe Paterno was going to make his entire Penn State squad clean Beaver Stadium (ha!) every Sunday morning after Saturday home games, I thought “good for him, way to punish the whole team for a couple players getting involved in an offseason fight. That’s old school.”

But then I read this article yesterday. And well, it just seems awful.

The players, some of them looking very groggy, arrived at the stadium in four blue university buses at 7:52 a.m.

Yesterday, Penn State players could be seen through the gate, scooping up wrappers and stuffing garbage bags.

According to Penn State spokesman Jeff Nelson, the players picked up trash in eight sections in the south end of the stadium and around the perimeter of the field. There are 92 sections in the stadium.

After Mr. Paterno talked to his team, most of the players headed for the buses.

But then linebacker Sean Lee came back out and delivered some bad news.

“Joe said we didn’t do a good enough job,” the Upper St. Clair High School product said. “We’ve got to go back.”

The players quickly shuffled off the buses and returned to the stadium to finish up their chores. Mr. Paterno dismissed them about 15 minutes later.

I understand Joe Pa’s reasoning here: one person messes up, everyone suffers the consequences. But let’s think about this for a minute. You are player No. 110 on the Penn State Nittany Lions — a redshirt freshman perhaps –  who just wants to go out on Saturday night and use your newfound college athlete status to score some trim. But thanks to some older dudes on the squad that decided to fight, you are up at 7:30 Sunday morning. Not cool. Not cool at all.

You know what else isn’t cool? Leaving your trash all over the stadium. That’s what the garbage receptacles are for, people.
