Roy Keane: A good wife always knows her place

good_wifes_guide.jpgWomen have made lots of strides in the past 50 years. The bras have been burned, the lives of quiet depression have been transformed into lives of loud, whiny desperation, and the kitchen is no longer the “only place” a woman “belongs.” Unless she wants to. See: It’s all about choice!

But when it hurts his team’s chances of landing players (thanks to a desolate geographic location), Roy Keane disagrees. He would prefer the WAGs stay out of marital decisions, thank you very much:

‘Priorities have changed for footballers and they are being dictated to by their wives and girlfriends,’ Keane was quoted as saying by British media on Wednesday.

‘I find it surprising that geography seems to play such a big part or that players let their wives decide,’ the Irishman said.

‘I think it’s weak. You see it with a couple of big players now. Clearly their wives and girlfriends are running their lives and that’s a bad sign. I realise it is part of the package and more so when there are children and schools involved, but ultimately you’re a footballer.

‘Why is there such a big attraction with London? It would be different if it was Chelsea, Arsenal or maybe Tottenham, but when they go to a smaller club just because it’s in London, then it’s clearly because of the shops.’

‘Their priorities are not the same as mine. We will do the best for our players’ families, but we’ve had a player this summer who didn’t even ring us back because his wife wanted to move to London. And shopping was mentioned. It might astonish many people, but it’s true,’ he said.

Here’s the thing, though, Roy: this astonishes no one. People — not just women — like to shop. They like nice things. Part of being a multi-millionaire footballer (I would assume) is having the capital to live in the best places in the world and buy your loved ones the things they want. You might be a mountain man that survives on grit and the souls of the countryside’s peasants, but most folks like to spend their millions on posh flats, not acres of ugly chicken farms.

Somewhere, whoever wrote that column in the 50’s just picked up a vintage Roy Keane jersey.
