Mindwrapping Barry Bonds

barry.jpgSince R and I do most of our MLB writing over at FanHouse, we concentrated our opining there last night. (They do, after all, pay us.) Still, even with near-constant discussion of Bonds in the past two weeks, I’ve yet to get my head around the whole thing. I’m angry, but not really; I’m sad: I’m apathetic; I’m enthralled; I’m appreciative; I’m tired; … I’m a whole lot of things that have yet to congeal into any sort of cohesive Barry Bonds opinion. On the 1-10 scale, 1 being total hate and 10 being a San Fransisco resident, I’m a 5.0.

While I made my some of what I think about Bonds clear last night — sorry, but 765 is a work of art, even if obtained with the aid of PEDs — there are other parts of me that are equally angry. I’m not angry that he broke the record; I have very little emotional ties to Hank Aaron or Babe Ruth or anyone else Bonds have left in the dust. Elvis don’t mean shit to me. What makes me sad is that I wasn’t able to celebrate Barry Bonds in the way any great record deserves to be celebrated: with a fervent countdown, with appointment television, with constant analysis. Instead, I sort of tuned out. I didn’t even see 755 or 756 until after the fact, thanks to the Bourne Ultimatum and a White Sox game. That my subconscious didn’t care beyond cursory appreciation, that most bloggers are just mentioning this and then moving on … that’s the saddest thing about Barry Bonds breaking this record. The record deserves more.

So I’ll keep trying to figure this out, but in the meantime, give our work at the FanHouse a little jog. The MLB guys have been tearing things up since the dirty deed transpired, and are well worth your time this morning.

I asked 20 people on the street if they thought Barry Bonds was a cheater… here’s what I found http://coedmagazine.com/sports/1723

I served it up, and you knocked it out of the park. Anything less would have been extremely disappointing.

I’m really glad I saw it live. I’ve never really liked Barry, and I don’t believe this record was attained legitimately. However, for being the history nut I am, I was in complete awe of the moment, and it made me soften a bit on Barry for the time being.

With that being said, I fully welcome A-Rod or Pujols to shatter the record Bonds sets.

I didn’t see the homerun live either. I stayed up to watch his first at bat and that was it. Somewhat tough to stay up till midnight on the east coast when you’ve got work in the morning.
