When the ESPYs had gravitas

Unlike our friend OMDQ over at Awful Announcing, I actually enjoyed several portions of the ESPYs, most notably the part wherein the talentless Dane Cook took a not-even-veiled shot at Jimmy Kimmel, and LeBron’s Prerogative (Lebrongative?), which was cleverly written but sung about like you’d expect LeBron to sing: poorly.

Also, there was Berman’s appearance and lame joke with Jamie-Lynn Sigler. The duo recalled Jabba the Hutt and Princess Leia in that gold costume, and hey, that’s always fun!

The requisite serious note: the pieces about Kay Yow and the Peace Players in Northern Ireland were both well done and thoughtful pieces, good uses of an otherwise boring, frivolous evening.

And they reminded me of this speech (OMDQ uncovered it first, natch), in which Jimmy Valvano provided some serious, life-altering TV. That feels like the last time the ESPYs were actually relevant or important, so it’s probably worth another viewing here. Enjoy, and never give up.
