The Winter Olympics are being held in a warm resort town

sochi.jpgCongratulations to the town of Sochi, Russia on their prize of hosting the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. However, this is a bit suspicious to me:

Sochi has a surprisingly warm climate for the latitude; winter temperatures rarely fall much below freezing. The average summer high temperature ranges between +26 °C (78.8 °F) and +32 °C (89.6 °F) with occasional extreme heat in some interior locations exceeding +40 °C (104 °F).

You know, I’m not saying the Winter Olympics have to be held in Antarctica or anything, but this is just a little too warm for my Olympic games liking. Why, poor Pyeongchang, South Korea just got shut out for their second straight bid. Doesn’t seem fair.

Although, with Global Warming and such, I would assume by 2014 Antarctica will have an average winter temperature of 60 degrees. So this is probably a good move in any event. Just don’t tell Spencer Hawes that.

UPDATE: As Orson Swindle points out at Das FanHaus, Sochi has the “snow-rich Caucasus Mountains, the sight of much of the action of the games.” Best of both worlds, I suppose.
