Like Urlacher leaping the line to attack Peyton Manning

Not exactly, I guess, but this video (HT: With Leather) is of one truly spectacular vertical jump.

Back when I used to play football (I was terrible, by the way), I always used to be really fascinated with vertical jumps. It’s mostly because mine could never top 24 inches, even on the best of days, and I had some serious hops envy. Man, that sucked. I’m not sure why I don’t think about this more now - my lack of raw athleticism continues to haunt me far beyond the death of my organized sports career - but I guess, at some point, I just stopped caring.

Thank God for Adrian Wilson, because the dude just made all of us look silly. That jump, in case you’re wondering, was 66 inches. 66! He could probably jump my white-boy 24 off his knees. Some things just don’t equate, eh?

there’s no doubt that the dude has hops but i’m a little confused here…that was not a standard vertical jump…he had a running start.
i’m curious what his real vertical jump is.
i’m not hating. it was still very cool!

This is very similar to what they did on espn in the summer with that street dunk contest, where they had the dudes jump over a bar and dunk a ball. I think the best they got over the bar was 60 inches, which is actually a better jump than Adrian’s, because he could not pull his legs up as high as Adrian does in this video. Anyway, I would guess Adrian’s raw vertical jump is somewhere over 40 inches, prolly 42 or 43. Which, in case you were wondering, is ridonkulous.

Yes I’m sure others have done the same thing but it wasn’t posted on Youtube. Still it’s an amazing sight to see!

I beg the differ, I think it is incredible. The guys on ESPN leaned into it and got a much longer running start. His vertical is definately over 50 inches. Wer used to this same jump exercise on the Iowa Football team. James Townsend jumped over a bar 1 foot shorter than that and his vertical was 51 inches.

how do they measure vertical jumps in college fb? Im just curious. I remember them saying that spud webb’s vertical jump was 47 inches. I would think he still could be considered as the best leaper in the history of modern athletics. No one remotely close to his size was doing 360 dunks and all that jazz…

I found that video earlier this week, and I share your amazement. I’m roughly the same height/weight as Wilson (he’s 6′3″ 230; I’m 6′2″ 230) but I can jump maybe half that high, if I’m lucky. That is some amazing athleticism.

    MATTY B,
In college fb, they measure vertical leaps on an electronic pad. The pad is hooked up to a reader and it calculates your time spent in the air and the force you exert when you land on the pad. It is a very efficient way to measure, you would be surprised at some the verticals peopel have.

How stupid can everyone be? NOBODY has a vertical leap of 50 inches…you are a joke. The BEST ever officially measure is 46 inches…which is insanely high. This bar is 60 inches and he is bending his legs up in s HUGE way..do you really think a guy can STAND and jump over 50 inches without bending his knees…are you serious?

Here are some facts..and I will give a GRAND to anyone who can disprove them!

    1. NOBODY has ever had their HEAD over the rim. By head, I mean chin..it has never happened. Guys have pulled themeslelve up, but never on the jump. Not Erving, Not Goat, Not Jordon, Not Ziani (not even close!)

    2. NOBODY has ever touched the top of the backboard. I know, I know - you have seen it. Wow…weird how there has NEVER been a photo of it. Gee - why is that? Seems like somebody MIGHT want to capture that. The top of backboard is 13 FLIPPIN’ feet. The highest dunk is BARELY over 12 feet and it is a fingertip dink dunk. If somebody could take money off the top of a backboard, somebody could dunk higher than 12 feet.

    3. Nobody has 50 inch vertical leap/ STOP THE FANTASY. I am 6′1″ and I had a 27 inch vertical. Wow you say? Who cares you say? I can reach about 8 feet. I can STAND and grab the rim…bo rocker step. Running I can get 37 inches and dunk over anyone you want…including twice on a 6′11″ man. At 37 inches, I am a good 13 inches over the rim and people freak out. I have been in dunk contests and people tell me I have a 48 inch vertical..I just laugh. If I had a 48 inch, my head would rub the rim. OK - take LeBRon…he is 6′8″ HE HAS NEVR gotten even teh TOP of his head to the rim (sure..go get the photo - I will wait) He ONLY need to get 40 inches RUNNING to hit it. I have seen him play LIVE since high school -he has never done it.

There you go. I cab’t wait to hear the fantasy continue. I have been obsessed with jumping and dunking since I was a kid. I wrote a college PHYSICS paper about converting forward momentum into upward thrust. I was a high jumper at THE (!) Ohio State University and I know more about jumping technique than you could ever hope to.
I have collected photos of some of the highest leapers ever - anyone know who Tyke Peacock was? I flew to Los Angeles in 1990 to WATCH live the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP for high dunking - they continued to raise the rim until one man remained. It was 11′6″ and it was by Dennis Johnsons brother. He told me he had a 42 inch VERT…maybe.

I just go insane when I hear all this garbage about vertical leap. Go to the NFL record pages…nobody over 42..most at 35 or below.

    Whatever.
