Robert Montgomery Knight as your college president
Peeking into the college hoops preview out of the Chicago Tribune, you will find some rather solid Big Ten and top 25 predictions from Skip Myslenski. Then, perhaps buried farther than it should be, this gem of a quote from Bob Knight on what he would do as a college president.
“The first thing I would do is throw out the NCAA rule book. Get rid of the sumbitch. I spoke to the National Press Club in Washington a couple years ago and I took the NCAA guide and I dropped it on the table and it sounded like a rocket going off, it was so heavy. And then, from beneath the podium, I took out the Constitution. I think it had four pages. And I said, `I’m a history major and I ought to know this exactly, but I think this thing has been amended 28 times since 1788.’ And I said, `It’s provided millions of people with the best lifestyle that’s ever existed in the world.’ Then I said, `This sumbitch has been amended 28 times since noon yesterday and nobody still has any idea what’s in it.’ I really believe you could take five pages and you could put all the rules necessary for college sports in five pages. Just list what you can do. Not what you can’t do. What you can do and that’s it.”
What a little sumbitch. (Although, it does seem like quite the logical idea at points, no?)

Can you imagine the absurdity of a rulebook listing what you can do instead of what you can’t do? How would that be shorter? “You can go out the door, get the newspaper, and loan the paper to a player to let him read it.” “You can hand the player a cup of water.” I mean, wouldn’t that go on and on?
