Weekend Fun: The Cardinals did what? Huh?

World Series:
So I’m at a Halloween party last night, wearing my Legends of the Hidden Temple contestant costume, minding my own business … when out of nowhere, this girl standing next to the TV starts having seemingly uncontrollable spasms. I surveyed the rest of the room, and saw a friend dressed as Kenny Rogers. He was ignoring the game. I saw a friend, a Tigers fan, dressed as Jim Leyland. He looked near tears.
And just like that, I knew World Series was over. I had sort of assumed the Tigers would win last night and exonerate me for worrying about whether I had the proper kneepads for my costume than finding an appropriate - in other words, quiet - place to watch the game. Instead, just like that, baseball is gone. The NBA is very nearly back, which helps, but it’s a sad day nonetheless. What other sport can you count on to be on at the random times, at 2:30 in the afternoon, at 5 p.m., at 8:30, at 11? Besides college basketball, that is.
Baseball season is a truly egalitarian thing, because at any point in time, any non-fan can stumble across a game and watch casually without a real need to digest what’s happening. Oftentimes, I am that fan. It’s part of what I love about baseball, and it’s a few months away again.

Weekend:
So, for the weekend, we can focus on college football and the NFL. Our Hoosiers have a big game today; they need to beat Michigan State if they want to continue thinking about a possible bowl game. There’s a variety of relatively big games going on today as well - that Florida-Georgia tilt could be closer than expected.
No NBA this weekend (it starts Tuesday with the Bulls…sweet), but this weekend, as all fall weekends do, brings a ton of NFL football our way. Big games? Jacksonville-Philly, Atlanta-Cinci, Tampa-Philly. Oh, and Bears-49ers. Here’s to rebound games AFTER a bye week. Good luck San Fran.
That, my friends, is a weekend. A weekend with, um, no more baseball. I’ll read Moneyball and get over it. How will you cope?
