Get rich or die bloggin'
Michelle Wieeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Boy, this is dissapointing.
Or, not really dissapointing, depending on how much you care about golf and/or Michelle Wie.
To be honest, I can’t say I care about golf enough myself to really be concerned if Wie starts rocking out some men at the U.S. Open, or any other tournament (except the, um, Masters, obviously). I guess I can say that I’m glad she’s being forced to qualify along with everyone else. Publicity stunt though it may be, if she can play with the men, she can play. If she doesn’t qualify, fine, but at least everyone in spikes is being held to the same standard.
That said, I can understand the argument here as well:
Wie’s presence in men’s tour events and her attempt to gain entry to the U.S. Open has been met with skepticism from male pros around the world. Recently, European Tour member Jean Van de Velde said, ‘I have no objection to Michelle Wie or any other women playing in our tournaments so long as we are allowed to play in theirs. And, yes, I’m ready to play in a skirt.’
It’s difficult to manufacture a real opinion on all of this. I’m strangled with indifference.

turdbrain.
It’s not the effing “men’s U.S. Open,” nor does it belong to the men who generally play in it. It’s “The U.S. Open,” which is (and always has been, by the way) “open” to everyone. The reason there’s a tour for women (and a “women’s U.S. Open”) is because the by-and-large-more-talented men would run the women out of contention. Like white men colonizing Indian land, only with fewer bad trades. Let women have a tour, and let women play in the Professional Golfer’s Association and United States Golfer’s Association events… do you see the word “men’s” in there anywhere crotchface?
I get it crapsacks, you’re afraid. You’re scared that a 16-year-old GIRL is going to storm “your” tour and take “your jobs.” Hmm… this is starting to sound familiar. People of different makeup plead for entry into an establishment that has never been accepting of them — and for no other reason than it’s never been done before and it’s not their place. Go back to your own tour! Your tour is equal to ours, it’s just that this ours and that one’s yours! I’m not afraid of you! JUST GET OUT OF OUR TOUR!!! YOU DONT SEE ME IN YOUR TOUR!!! ARGHGARGRH…(face explodes)
Boob is correct. It is not at all a publicity stunt. Michelle Wie can plain kick the crap out of any women golfers on the LPGA. The PGA is not man-exclusive. The LPGA is lady-specific, hence the ‘L.’ Wie’s strongest competition comes from men, as she showed yesterday, beating both PGA Tour players in her group.
Boobs,
Anger. Chill. It’s golf.
I’m relatively sure you weren’t calling me turdbrain and crapsacks - though I like those names - I think you were referring to the vaguely European Van de Velde’s quote.
If not, you need to relax. I said I can understand Van de Velde’s point of view, but not that I agree with it or espouse it, just that I was finding it difficult to rouse up any sort of strong opinion, a difficulty you obviously do not share. Nor did I call the tour the Men’s U.S. Open, though I think you might be relying a little too much on semantics to support the “it’s the U.S. OPEN, not Men’s U.S. Open” argument, but again, whatever.
However, Kevin - while I agree (it’s blatantly obvious) that Wie can compete with men, as she showed yesterday, I would also point to her paltry wins record on the women’s tour as a detractor to the “her best competition has come from men.” Well, let’s see. According to Wikipedia, Wie has won exactly zero professional LPGA events, despite competing in 27. Her only win is on the amatuer links. She hasn’t competed in many LPGA events, a choice she has no doubt made independently, and before being pushed out of the rankings for failure to compete in the minimum number of events, she was ranked No. 2 - but not No. 1, and not by a lot.
The point I’m trying to make in that incoherent mess? That Wie is obviously gifted, she’s a phenom, a prodigy at this age, and will probably be playing consistently with men at some point down the road. But she’s not quite there yet, so we should probably save the coronations - and the vitriol, boobs - until she is.
Wow. I might actually care about this now.
Michelle Wie hasn’t won any LPGA events. I wonder why that is? Maybe because SHE ISN’T A MEMBER OF THE TOUR. And, as rules state, you can only compete in 8 events per year and only with a sponsor’s exemption if you are not a member of the tour. Therefore, Wie has exactly 8 chances per year to play on the LPGA Tour. In 2005, Wie was second in runner-up finishes on the tour, the tour that she isn’t a member of. 3 second place finishes in 8 events. That means she only had less runner-up finishes than Paula Creamer and Lorena Ochoa(the LPGA’s best player), who played in a combined 48 events. So true, she hasn’t won yet. She also plays in a sixth as many events as everyone else on the Tour and has more runner-up victories. So the argument that she can’t win on the LPGA tour is flawed. Hell, the PGA Tour had a player who couldn’t win for years, and look where Lefty is now.
But I agree she has areas of her game to work on. The point is, she shouldn’t have to wait until she can beat Tiger to play with the guys. She’s just as good as half of them right now. And with how competitive professional golf is, that’s saying a lot.
BOOBS
Fair enough. Part of the point I was trying to make there was that it might not be a bad idea to run roughshod over the LPGA tour - i.e. actually sign up and play a few events - for a year or two before taking on the men. That way, there can be no detractors (like myself) who say she is unproven. It seems like, until then, she’ll keep getting this same sort of criticism. But I don’t really know.
Also, Lefty won a lot on the tour, he just never won majors. Too lazy to look up the stats on that one, but dubious distinction “best golfer never to have won a major” comes with many other assorted wins, one would imagine.
WHO CARES???? IT’S F-ING GOLF. Let’s face it, its more interesting watching the fairway grow than watching people play on it.
That post stinks of intelligence
My ire was not directed at you, E, it was at these misogynist golfers — vijay, Van de Velde — who give bigots a reason to further this idea that women dont belong on the pga because there are no men on the ladies’ tour. It’s stupid, pure and simple. As for Wie, I’m not arguing her talent, although she is incredibly talented, and will be successful (at least moderately) once she learns how to putt. She’s only 16, and I agree — give her some time.
Now that my heart rate is racing, i’m tuning in to the 700 Club, my new source for cutting edge health stories. Go Pat!!
Rick and I got you the most comments ever on one of your posts, but it’s just golf, so who cares?
Close. But the Bob Knight video and the Illinois post about Chief Illiniwek still have the most, I believe.
Was it this comment that put it over the top? You’ll just have to find out by exploring the site!
I will no longer participate in these commenting shenanigans until you give the viewers what they want… a blog about PAT ROBERTSON! The dude legpressed a ton with only the help of God and his strawberry flaxseed milkshake… What’s more newsworthy in the world of sports?
[…] So, we’re not exactly major golfers around here, but we love the major tournaments, especially when Michelle Wie isn’t playing in them. (Kidding!) […]

All the darkness in the world cannot put out the smallest candle. The darker it is, more brightly shines the candle. instead of complaining about the dark search for your candle. Believe me; It exists…
