Anime and football : It’s a winning combo

This video we dug up on Youtube explains the NFL in the way only a Japanese anime can. The two commentators seem particularly jacked about the Super Bowl. Watch it; you can literally feel the excitement through your computer screen.

From watching the video, we not only were schooled in the finer workings of the National Football League, but we also found out that Japan has an American football league called the X-League. Not only that, but the winner of the Japan X-Bowl plays the victors of the Koushien Bowl (college championship) in the, wait for it, RICE BOWL.

That’s just too perfect.

Or how about the Christmas Bowl? You know, the championship game for high school teams.

We had no clue Japanese high schools played American Football.

You really do learn something everyday, people.

What is it with Japenese men wearing pink? What color in Japan has the same connotation as in the west?

This was a segment from “Eyeshield 21,” a weekly anime series (now in its second year; airs Wednesday nights at 7pm in Japan) about Japanese high school teams playing American football (or “Ame-futo,” short for “Amerikan futobouru”). It’s actually sponsored in part by NFL Japan. The series is based on the still-continuing manga of the same name, which is serialized weekly in Japan and is also now being published bimonthly, translated into English, in North America. Between the manga, anime, and an assortment of video games and card games based on them, it’s a savvy way to entice Japanese kids into getting involved in the sport. –AAC (yeah, I’m a fan ;^) )
