Tennessee’s Candace Parker dunks?

Candace-Parker.jpgWe here at the Postmen aren’t sexist, but we will point out inaccuracies when we see them. No. 2 Tennessee destroyed No. 15 Army 102-54 in first round NCAA women’s tourney action. That much we know to be fact.

But what we aren’t so sure about was the report that Candace Parker dunked twice in the game. This was the first time any woman had dunked in a tourney game, the first time a woman had dunked twice in a game and was only the fourth dunk in NCAA women’s basketball history. We applaud her for that.

But after watching the video of it on ESPN, I would say the results are inconclusive at best. It looks more like she threw the ball over the rim, then grabbed onto it after the ball went in. It’s debatable. Take a look at the video and judge for yourselves.

Drink much haterade?? I don’t think many people realize that a women dunking is never going to be the same as a man dunking. It is a lot harder for women to palm a basketball, making dunking more difficult. A basketball to most men’s hands is like a volleyball to most women’s hands. Actually, about 70 percent of women in the WNBA can get above the rim, but not many of them can palm a basketball to dunk it. Quit hatin’…do your thing Candace.

What the previous post said may all be true, but it still doesn’t make it a dunk. Just becuase she is a girl does not mean we change the definition of a dunk. Although an athletic play, it’s not fair to the women who have, or will in the future actually throw down. We dont call a ball hit off the wall in softball by a girl a homerun, we don’t call two goals in womens hockey a hat trick, so we shouldn’t call a layup with a rim grab afterwards a dunk.
